Oolong tea

Many people consider oolong tea to be a type of black tea or sometimes green tea. In this article, we would like to answer the question “Is oolong tea black tea?” and tell you about oolong tea in general.

What is oolong tea?

Oolong tea is a completely different type of tea than black or green tea. However, depending on the processing method, oolong tea may have more of the characteristics of black and green tea.

Oolong tea is a unique product of true artisanal processing. Depending on the place where oolong tea is grown and how it is processed, the appearance, shape, taste and aroma of tea may differ.

Differences between oolong tea and black tea

Oolong tea, like other types of tea, is made from the Camellia sinensis plant. However, each tea is processed differently.

The differences between them are as follows

Appearance

Oolong tea usually has larger leaves suitable for processing, while black tea has smaller buds. Oolong tea leaves are rolled because the edges are peeled off during the rolling process.

Taste

Oolong tea has caramel, roasted and honey flavors. Some varieties of dark oolong tea have these flavors. However, black tea has a mineral base that is not easily found in black tea.

Oxidation process

The oxidation rate of oolong tea is fast, somewhere between the oxidation rate of black and green tea. Therefore, it is considered partially oxidized. Black tea is processed to produce fully oxidized tea leaves.

Taste and caffeine content

Oolong tea is known for its sweet, honey fruity aroma. Black tea usually has earthy, spicy, nutty, and caramel notes. Compared to oolong tea, black tea has a stronger flavor.
